Hundreds flee by boat as wildfire hits southern Italy
Hundreds of people in Italy were evacuated by sea on Sunday as a wildfire swept through parts of the southern Adriatic coast, with many more expected to be rescued, the coastguard said.
"More than 400 tourists and beachgoers have been evacuated by sea, the only viable evacuation route," the coastguard said on its WhatsApp channel, adding that operations were ongoing.
Evacuees were being rescued from the area around the town of Peschici in the southern Puglia region.
A coastguard spokesman told AFP that around 300 more people were expected to be evacuated.
Italy's community-style theatres make UNESCO world heritage list
The system of 18th- and 19th-century teatri condominiali community theatres in central Italy has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, bringing Italy's total number of UNESCO-recognised sites to 62, Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli announced on Sunday.
“It is with pride and satisfaction that we welcome the decision” to recognise the historic theatres founded by local citizen collectives in Le Marche, Emilia-Romagna and Umbria, he said, as quoted in a press release from his ministry.
The word “condominio” means “co-ownership” in Italian. The theatres "feature tiered boxes, carefully designed auditoriums for optimal acoustics and visibility, stalls, foyers, ridotti, and historic stage machinery", according to a UNESCO press release.
"This recognition cements Italy’s top position in the UNESCO World Heritage List. A top position that makes us proud and spurs us on to do more and do better," said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in a statement.
Italy's Meloni condemns deadly Berlin Pride attack
Italy's Prime Minister Georgia Meloni on Sunday condemned a deadly car-ramming attack near a Pride festival in Berlin.
"Italy firmly condemns and opposes all forms of hate and extremism," Meloni said on X, adding: "We stand with Germany and the German people".
"On behalf of the Italian government, I express solidarity and sincere sympathy regarding the distressing news coming from Berlin," Meloni said of the attack on Saturday night when a vehicle hit people leaving a Pride festival, killing one person and injuring 16.
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also expressed solidarity with the victims on X, writing: "A united Europe stands against the shadow of terrorism, against those who, through hatred and violence, seek to strike at the freedom of citizens."
